I heard that old games like Counter-Strike and WarCraft III : Frozen throne
aren't compartible with Windows vista. In other words, Vista can't run these
games. Is it TRUE...? (I also heard some applications don't work too.)

Depends on a lot of things...games will work on one machine and not another,
check out www.vistareadygames.com , you may just find the answers

Both my son and I have run Counter Strike without problems.

WarCraft 3 works fine here. I've yet to come across something that doesn't
work.

I had a message when I ran the installer for Quake 4 that told me there were
"issues" with this game. It pointed me at the website, which wasn't very
helpful, but you can't blame bill & the gang for that, they tried.

I digress. Once I installed the game & the latest patch, it works fine. It
may have worked anyway, I never tried. I googled the problem, & the general
advice, which would probably go for any game, is to install the latest
patches, graphics & sound drivers.

Paul,

Did you run the Warcraft III installer in compatibility mode? or standard
install? Friend of mine just got a new Vista PC & it will not run the
installer at all.

Cheers

Counterstrike works just fine - I still play it a lot! though 640x400 is a
bit painful on my 24" monitor.

There are a couple of issues with older games.
1 - Some games assume administrator privledges. To run these games you can
right-click on them and select "run as administrator" - you may have to do
this with the install program as well.
2 - some dos games are full-screen (like doom 1) and Vista doesn't allow
full-screen dos games any more. To run these games, download dosbox and run
the games inside of it.
3 - some games use direct soundblaster calls and can't handle modern windows
sound drivers. To run these games, dosbox or vdmsound should solve the
problem. Note: I have not tried vdmsound in Vista yet.
4 - some games complain about the version number of the OS. To run these
games you can right-click on them and select a compatibility mode such as
"Windows 95"
5 - there are a very few games that require something unusual such as an old
feature in directx that isn't supported any more or direct access to hw or
whathaveyou. Most of these games can be made to work via the "Microsoft
Application Compatibility Toolkit" but its tricky.

Hope that helps!

If you're worried about compatibility, get an XBox 360, but write off
Counter-Strike, you can get your RTS fix with Lord of the Rings: Battle for
Middle Earth 2 or C&C3 on 360 (Only RTSs I've ever played where a gamepad
actually works)

I guess Shadowrun has counter strike style play, but a bit more
sci-fi'esque.
