I received a e-mail addressed to one of my user names that
I used on a web site. The e-mail has nothing to do with
any website I would have visted (singles related spam) but
it is a user name that I've used (one time only).

I can't remember the website I used this user name at. The
company sending the e-mail had to get my user name from
the website user name list or my stored user names on my
puter.

Is there any way for me to tell what website that I used
that user name at?

How did they get my user name?

How can I stop this from happening in the future?

I have not opened the e-mail. Thanks

I've been using a service called spamex ( www.spamex.com ) ; their
service will answer all your questions, and for $10 a year it's well
worth it.

just a great service to solve the problems you are having.

Unscrupulous websites will sell their email address lists so it's always
wise to use an email address that's a throw away if you don't want anything
from them, or munge it like I do here so spambots can't harvest it.
Do a Google search for your email addy and it might show where you posted
it.
Use a spam filtering service such as SpamCop Mail ($30US/year) - I maybe get
1 spam per week slipping through while Spamcop catches at least 60 per day.

Here's the cheap way out -- get yourself some free mail
account and use that address here and on sites that do not
have an acceptable privacy policy.

A few times a week I just mark and delete all the crap in my free
account without even reading it and the people who know my "real"
one don't tend to send me SPAM or worms or viruses.

I'm wanting to nail whoever gave out my user name, if that
indeed what is happened.

I'm not concerned about the e-mail spam as this is the
first piece of spam on this account.

Good luck. Once your email addy is published it's public property
unfortunately. Best use a good spam filtering service and let them do the
nailing for you.
