Hi All;

I'm new to this site and forums so pls be patient.
Laptop = Toshiba Satellite Pro P100 A3A Windows XP

I was renewing my Trend Micro when it stalled (Not Responding), status was up to Publishing...It was not responding for over and hour so reluctantly I turned off computer from on off button (nothing else worked).
When computer restarted some desktop icons are not recognized e.g. white with blue box and Recycle Bin has gone.
  • I can not click (left or right) on the desktop or any icons.
  • I can go to start > run and select Programs and Accessories (sometimes)
  • I can not access the Internet - am now on another laptop.
  • I have run Spyware Doctor and removed Trojan ByteVerify.
  • I can access Task Manager to log off and when I do this the desktop icons that were not recognised display correctly.
  • I have created a new user with same desktop results - I was hoping they would display correctly.
  • I have previously read to go to task Manager and run explorer.exe to reinstate desktop icons - nothing happens.
  • I have created new shortcuts (like Word and Internet Explorer) to the desktop from Start > run but they are also not recognised.
  • I tried to do system restore (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools),but there is no System Restore.
I know all the information (music,photos, files etc) are still there, working and available (when computer was logging off and the desktop icons displayed correctly I could double click and open them and I can see everything is still there.

I'm not sure what else to try?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
