Well... after waiting with baited breath for a few weeks for a reply to this
posting, and receiving some pretty useless (but gratefully received) replies
on the same posting on other sections of these notice boards, I have found
why the problem I have listed is happening, but first, a lesson to all of
us.....

Repeat after me:

I (state your name)
Hereby promise to always check Microsofts integrated 'Help And Support'
Before asking questions on Microsoft's notice boards....

As suggested in help and support, when wanting to make a folder private, you
should locate that folder MANUALLY inside the 'documents and settings' on the
C: drive.

It seems that right clicking on my folder and setting the sharing properties
under 'files stored on this computer' after clicking 'my computer' on the
start menu is not sufficient and will cause problems. Have I discovered a
bug?

ARE YOU LISTENING GATES?

Sometimes, one can't see the wood for the trees... ha ha

I would be interested if anyone can replicate this situation on their
machines, any feedback would be welcome.... it might be worth reporting back
to Microsoft.

Big Liam.....

he may be listening, but your description makes no sense. define exactly
the sequence of clicking and setting. it sounds like you may have been
trying to set the properties on a shortcut instead of the file or folder
itself. that is why its best to find what you want with windows explorer
instead of one of the shortcuts on the desktop or start menu.

Sorry if that description of the route to the folder was a little complicated.

I wouldn't try and set parameters for anything using it's shortcut icon.

I suppose what I meant to say was this: There is a difference between
setting the sharing properties using the following sequence:

start/my computer then right clicking on 'documents' (where 'documents' is
the name of the folder containing your documents) contained under the section
'files stored on this computer' (i.e. using the start menu)

And:

start/my computer/c:/documents and settings/'documents' (where 'documents'
referrs to my folder, in this case 'Liam's documents'), right clicking and
choosing sharing options from there (i.e. using explorer instead of the start
menu)

If you set your documents folder as private by clicking the checkbox when
using windows explorer to locate the folder, it actually greys out the
checkbox option in the first example above. Maybe you're right Dave, maybe
the icon representing 'Liam's documents' under 'files stored on this
computer' is actually a shortcut even though it isn't listed as one.

If you get a minute, try the two different methods above and see if you can
replicate the problem i've had...

Thanks for your reply mate....

Big Liam :)

So.. tell us more about the new bug that you have discovered.. and his name
to you is "Mr William Gates, Sir'.. :)

Mike, I don't think it's as much a bug as what was outlined by Dave, as I
already said, sometimes you can't see the wood for the tree's.

Basically, you can't seem to set folder privacy using 'start/my computer',
you have to manually locate the folder in question using Windows Explorer.

Mr. William Gates Sir's software was misleading me... lol

Thanks for your reply :)

In Start Menu and on the Desktop, you are only setting access to the
Shortcut which points to the My Documents directory, but not the
directory itself. It is not a bug. It is the way files are handled.
Pretty much in any OS to boot. To test this, create a text file in My
Documents. When done right click on it and send it to the desktop (which
creates a shortcut). Again - you will have the Shortcuts properties and
the original documents Properties - neither the same, nor should they be.
Things like My Computer and Network Places are different since they are
function calls of Windows Explorer, much like the Show Desktop icon
which doesn't execute a specific program or folder, it just calls a
specific function.
