I've seen multiple threads on this topic, and wanted to
share what worked for me. My problem was that
apprimately 1 in every 2-3 attempts to Remote Desktop my
XP Workstation would result in a gradual loss of
the "screen painting" until I finally get nothing.
Trying to force the remote PC to reboot in this condition
is a struggle.

On the remote XP box, I went into Display properties,
click Settings, click Advanced, click Troubleshoot, then
lower the "Hardware Acceleration" slidebar a notch.
Lowering it one notch seems to have worked for me; I
haven't had a problem since.

I hope this solution works for all of you who are plagued
by the same problem.

Excellent description and solution, Rob.

My guess is that you might, in future, find that video driver revs allow you
to move that slider back up. It'd be interesting for folks with this issue
to compare video chipsets and drivers, maybe.
