I am embarrased to ask this, but the good old game of
solitaire (otherwise known as patience), which I've been
playing for years on the pc in idle moments, has suddenly
and inexplicably fallen off the screen. I have tried
reloading XP and 98, but to no avail.
How can I reconstitute it?

Is there a file called solitaire in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder? If so you
can access it from there and create a new shortcut.

The file is named sol.exe and it will be in the
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. If it is not, you can reinstall it by
using the Add/Remove Windows Component of the Add/Remove
Programs item in the control panel. You will need your XP
CD-Rom in the drive.

HTH,
Bill

Assuming you mean that your desktop shortcut has vanished. Right-click
the desktop, new ... shortcut. On my computer the path is
windows\system32\dllcache\sol.exe
