Software Update won't work

Defender says an update is available. When I clcik to update I don't pass
the validation test with Microsoft. This product has updated before. All my
other software updates. I have a valid copy of windows XP and have my
product key. What is wrong?

Kevin--I've given details in a reply later in this thread to "same
issue"--please check that message and see if it helps you out.

First thing I would do, actually, is go to Windows Update, do an express
scan, and apply all offered critical patches.
 
I went to another micrsoft site and hit a validation key. I also shut the
filter off on my maxthon browser. I was able to download the new defender.
I am not sure which allowed me to download - the re-validation or the filter
ebing turned off.
 
Okay I have did a manual install and check of the Validation Key. Everything
was valid. I even shut off the Phising Filter just incase. All I get when the
auto download runs is a blank screen that looks like a image cannot be
displayed. :)
 
I don't have a clear picture:

You open Windows Defender and have the update button.

You hit that and it takes you to a page with a big orange button.

You hit that and get a download page with a validate button.

You hit validate--is there an "alternative method" choice on that page?
