Hello, I have installed SUS & am currentley setting all of
my Win2000 users local policys to look to SUS for their
updates.

We have quite a few remote users, connecting via dial up,
broadband, ISDN & Mobile connect cards through a VPN

My question is that the updates are initiated in the
background & the first the users knows about it is if a
reboot is required.... What happens if the user
disconnects in the middle of an update... ? is there a
risk of trashing the system?

Well, a disconnect would have the same consequences as a standard Windows
Update interruption. The OS could be damaged and you might need to run a
repair.

You have a tricky situation there - the administrative user will receive a
notice that updates have been downloaded and are ready to install but won't
install them if you choose this option (From the SUS white paper):

Auto download and notify for install

This option automatically begins downloading updates and then notifies a
logged-on administrative user prior to installing the updates.

You could also put those particular workstations (laptops?) in a special OU
that doesn't get the SUS policy. Configure them manually to use the real
Windows Update site automatically.
