Check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run in
the registry

Jonathan,
First you should open each program, and it "Preferences, User Settings, or Tools menus. Check and see if there is an option to have the Program start when Windows is started and/or when an Internet Connection (if you are connected to the Internet continuously such as cable or DSL) is present. Uncheck this/these features.

Greetings --

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Have you looked at the "System Configuration Utility"? To open it:
Start/Run/type in "msconfig" , minus the quote markers, and click "OK". When
it opens, click the "Startup" tab and you will see a list of programs
loading at Startup. Remove the checkmark for any you do not wish to load.
