Tom's pest control

The people on this board know more than most and hopefully can help me. I
have a leased computer from Dell that goes back in a month. Are there any
good program removal software applications out there. I don't want Dell to
have any business/personnel information.

Thank

Yeah, if it's MicroSoft Control Panel Add/Remove programs or Format the
hard drive and forget about it.

Get the Knoppix Linux LiveCD image, burn it on a CD.
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Boot from that Knoppix CD and adjust the settings as you like. You can
save the settings on an USB-stick or Floppy disk.

(the HowTo might need some googling)

And I'm sure you can format or wipe disks using a tool on Knoppix. I'm
rather new on the linux stuff, but I know there must be a tool ;-)

If the information is sensitive, bank accounts etc, Then you should
use a disk wiping utility which will overwrite all info so that it
cannot be easily retrieved.
Try here for a list of free utilities.

Don't worry about wiping the disk completely before you send it
back... large firms that lease systems do it as a security precaution,
and I'm sure that your machine will in fact go back for "retooling"..
which means screws replaced, ect. and the drive re-imaged to ensure
all software and OS are in top condition... more than likely the unit
will be sold as a referb machine.

I have used a disk wiper for some time when sending machines back at
lease end.. what is nice is you can boot from the floppy, start the
process and walk away..

... to verify the wipe.. when I first started doing this I tried to go
back to the machine with tools and try and recover any information....
it was completely wiped. Others here have given you some good
references, here is another:

If the sensitive information is scattered far and wide throughout
the machine, it would probably be best to format and reload the
OS from scratch. If you know where the sensitive files are, you
could delete them and then defrag the drive.

If they are more sensitive than that, you could wipe the drive and
then format and reload the OS.

....if they are *really*, *really* sensitive, destroy the harddrive.
