Creating software mirror is a snap but I want to break
and preserve the drive for future recovery.

When I break Drv 0 the Drv 1 that was mirroring now
inherits the next available drive letter E.
Drv 1 will boot but when you log in it kicks you out back
to log in screen.

I know this is a problem and have seen others with same
issue and a remote registry hack fixes this.

Is there a proper way to break and not have Windows issue
the drive letter.

Thanks

The problem here is that you are trying to use a mirror in place of a
backup or disk image. Mirrors are to reduce the down time in case of a disk
failure, while a backup or disk image is better for recovery.

This MS Knowledge Base article describes the drive letter problem, and has
five suggested solutions:

When you break a mirror Windows has to split it up on two drive letters,
there is no proper way to avoid this, except possibly removing the disk
without breaking the mirror. I wouldn't recommend this method, though.

Best regards
