software loop

I have a win2k system that loops during the loading of local settings (near
the end of the boot process). It does the same in safe mode. It starts to
load the desktop then loops back and starts loading the local settings
again and again and again.

Hi - this is an XP group. You should post in a Win2k group, and I'd also
suggest supplying a lot more information (including your SP, and what
happened just before this problem occurred).

What is the recent history of this machine?

The problem is usually (but not always!) caused by an incorrect
system drive letter. Booting into the Recovery console and running
the command

fixmbr

may fix it. If it does not then the cure depends on your setup: If
the machine is networked or if you have ready access to another
WinXP/2000 PC.
 
as i'm told, there were exe error messages which lead to an update which
lead to the problem
