Software Installing

On a daily basis I have programs install themselves on my
PC. I go to control panel, click on 'Add or Remove' and
find new software that has installed itself daily. I
remove them but find the process tiresome.
I'm a Windows XP user and have a LINKSYS router/firewall
but recently had to modify the firewall setting to allow
uploads to Ebay. Most pople do not even have firewalls
but there must be something I can do at the IE level or
the Operating system level to fix this.

Please give an example of the name of the software that gets installed so
that it can be identified and fix how it got installed. See the folowing:
