I've seen a small utility around that turns off background programs in
order to use an intensive program such as a cd burner. Now that I want
it I can't find it anymore.

Does anyone know which program I am referring to and where I can
download it?

EndItAll may be what you want. Version one is sufficient for your needs
and easier to use.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think winsolo is the one I'd seen but both
program look like they would work. Has anyone tried them on xp? Neither
program says they are for xp. I'm going to go ahead and install them and
see if they work.

ctrl+alt+del brings up the close progs menu. I think explorer is the only
one that needs to be open, but I leave systray too (just because _I_CAN_
OOOOh!) I had similar problems but this worked fine for me
