software has lost video

We put windows xp pro on a home made gaming computer. We lost video only on accounts not on startup. When we try to go into an account there is a flash of regular homepage then horizontal lines. Everything responds if you know exactly which keys to push. Only video is affected. How do we fix this?

This isn't a software issue - it's hardware. Try another graphics card.
 
We tried to reformat the harddisk going through windows xp setup. It wouldn't respond. What is going on?
