A friend had one of these he was not using, so he sent it to me. No
CD though. Probably no loss though. The CD probably would have been
for Windows 98, and I am using Windows 2000 Pro.

I spent more than a day trying to download drivers and software for it
from the Epson site. All I could get was TWAIN error messages.
IfranView claims it cannot connect, or the TWAIN driver is not
installed.

The Device Manager shows that This device is working properly.

I have only two USB connections and I have tried them both.

Is there any hope that I can use this scanner?

TIA
Bob

Yes but first you will have to be a little more specific in the error
messages you are receiving. What errors?
What driver did you download?
What did you select in the program, the correct scanner?

I had a problem like this when I bought my Epson 640 some time
back. The Epson drivers did not contain a TWAIN driver - I had
to install the (supplied) Adobe Photodeluxe app to get TWAIN.

You're probably seeing the same thing, but I'm not sure what
the solution is :-(

I found out that the arms that attach the lamp holder to the guide
rail are both broken. The software was working. It was a glitch in
the hardware.

Thanks for answering though. It helped me focus on just what the
problem could be.

Twain is the standard for imaging devices it allows any Twain
compliant application to access any Twain compliant device. All EPSON
Drivers are Twain compliant, PhotoShop does not include any device
drivers.
You still have to scan from an application just like you Print from an
application. How else did you think you would access the scanner?

It seems it wasn't the same problem anyway.

I'm perfectly aware that you need to scan from an application,
and the difference between TWAIN and the device drivers.
Thanks for the patronising reply.

The problem I am describing occurred on Win98, but may no
longer be an issue with 2k or XP. If you installed the Epson
drivers and applications on a system that had not had any other
scanner installed, you could not scan. Whether you tried the
Epson software, PSP, Photoshop or anything else, the problem
was that there were no TWAIN DLLs on the system. Other
people's scanner drivers would install these as necessary, but
Epson's did not. The scanner was also supplied with Adobe
Photodeluxe and, rather surprisingly, installing this would
install the TWAIN DLLs. Photodeluxe could then be uninstalled,
leaving the TWAIN stuff intact. It was common
problem/workaround when this scanner was new, judging by the
number of people on forums and newsgroups posting about it.

My apologies but your first post clearly stated:

"I had a problem like this when I bought my Epson 640 some time

Before applying any solution you should first isolate the issue.
The Twain driver is the product driver that complies with the Twain
standard (EPSON Twain 5 - EPSON Scan), the files you refer to are the
source manager (application support layer) files nothing to do with
the driver. These are not loaded by default in Windows 98 but it is
the responsibility of the APPLICATION to ensure that this support is
loaded, not the product driver. It is possible to download the four
files and copy them to C:\Windows but they must all be present and of
the correct version (Twain standard 1.7 is not compatible with Windows
98). This was changed in all subsiquent Microsoft O/S as support for
Imaging devices is loaded by default. It does cause confusion
especially loading Windows 98 applications on another O/S or loading
digital cameras.
