I have removed the items from my startup that I do not want to auto start,
however my question is how do you know which ones shouldn't be removed?

"Shouldn't" is a relative term, as far as startup goes. Nothing in there is
needed to run Vista. You, on the other hand, might consider one of your
added apps to be quite important to you, and would want it's startup app to
run. You would be the only one who would know what you want to run.

This is not an accurate picture of what you see in msconfig. You see the
actual file name in msconfig's startup. Look up what you see at the links I
gave you or use Google.

This is something no one online can tell you. You have to research all the
entries. If you are unable to research yourself invite someone over who is
computer literate to help you.
