My software explorer 'Enable' button is greyed out and can't be used to
enable any programs. Also, I do not have any access to add or remove 'Allowed
Items' and remove anything from 'Quarantined Items'

Please help. Many thanks.

It sounds as if you're running as a limited user.

Hello SU,

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as an
administrator.

What is the version of Windows Defender?
Please go to Help, about, and post the top most of the three version numbers
there.

You can repair Windows Defender.
First exit WD; using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Change.
Click Next, and then click Updªte.

Reboot

Let us know how it works ºut.

I am an administrator and have already checked Group policy but have failed
to find anything that controls this. I have tried un-installing and
re-installing quite a number of times. I'm running XP SP2 and the info about
the defender is as follows:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1904.0
Definition Version: 1.14.2033.5

Many thanks.

Under "Options" if you scroll all the way to the bottom there's a box marked
"Allow everyone to use Windows Defender". Is it checked?
