software dongle

We use a software package called Solid edge, which uses a dongle controlled license. The problem is that Windows XP (pre installed on a workstation) does not seem to recognise any dongles as being present. Windows XP is recognising the dongle on a couple of other workstations (same model) but i havent been able to detect any difference in the settings - I may be looking in the wrong area
The dongle is connected to the LPT 1 port, and has no conflicting IRQs, the driver for the port is digitally signed, all relevant services such as plug and play, are switched on and set to automatic. I am fully aware that the solution is more than likely to be a simple one, such as the ticking of a check box but its is a solution that has currently evaded me.
I would appreciate any assistance that you would be able to offer at this time

I would think that SolidEdge would be best qualified to answer this
question. Have you consulted their web page?

we have consulted solid edge, however it also doesnt recognise other software dongles which we have tried
we have them working on some xp machines, but cant seem to find any difference in the settings.

Software dongles are parallel/serial port devices which the software uses to
access the authorised license. XP does not allow the direct access of any
hardware so no dongles would work. Solid Edge must provide an XP solution
or you will never be able to use the software on XP.

My guess is that it may be the PC's BIOS settings, rather than XP settings.

Does the parallel port show up in Device Manager properly? Is it set up for
bidirectional operation in the BIOS?

I have no idea what sort of dongle Solid Edge uses. I've used Zemax (a lens
design code) successfully with a Rainbow Sentinel parallel port key under XP
Home. This proves nothing about whatever key Solid Edge uses, but perhaps
they also use a Sentinel key. I know that IDL (www.rsinc.com) also used the
Sentinel key. Support for the key can be found at www.rainbow.com.

Best of luck.

Address altered. Replace nkbob with bobkn.
