I wan't to identify programs running in the background
screen by Ctl.-alt-delete but nothing happens. My
computer takea almost three minutes to start up when it
took a third of that time before. I ran scan disk and
defrag with little improvement. I have 65% free space so
memory does not seem to be the problem. I'm running XP
on a Dell Dimension 4100. Also, I cannot uninstall some
programs that I think might be the culprit.

Any advice for this novice would be helpful.

To get a handle on startup items, use the Startup page found in the
Microsoft System Configuration tool (Start> Run> MSCONFIG).

If you still have trouble getting Task Manager to appear, some things to
do:
**check the system with an up to date anti-spyware program such as AdAware
**check system with an up to date antivirus program
**try one of MVP Kelly Theriot's fixes. Am thinking one of the choices on
"Line 113" of the following page should help:

Go to Google.com and type in the full process or file name in the search
box, hit search, you will find out what app it belongs to by going to some
links. I have had good luck so far. Within the first 3-4 results.
