I am looking to purchase a number of Socket's SDIO Scanners. I know these
are not traditional laser scanners, but rather, they read a rasterized image
of the scanned barcode. I know this is supposed to take a little bit longer
time wise.

Can anyone give me some ideas of real life experience?

Though I am not familiar with the specific model you are talking about, I
have used many scanners over the years from traditional linear laser
scanners to the newer imaging scanners.

The real test is in what you want to read. If you are only going to read
linear barcodes then you will never beat the laser, however most of the
imaging scanners that I have seen (Intermec, Symbol & Welch Allyn/Hand Held
Products mainly) are very good and the additional delay in reading the
barcodes is negligable once the user gets used to the scanner.

Obviously the use of the imaging scanners also opens up further oportunities
in the future to read 2D barcodes and (certainly in the case of the
Intermec) actually take pictures with the scanner.

Good luck.
