Socket A Motherboard recommendation

Since it looks like my A7A266 motherboard is dead (see other thread :)
I want to replace it cheaply with another Socket A motherboard so that
I can reuse the CPU, memory, etc.

After a quick Google I'm wondering is the A7N8X best option? I'm new to
replacing motherboard - will this motherboard fit in the same case as
the A7A266? (ie, will the same screw holes align up?)

According to the ASUS CPU support site, it supports both my current
CPU (2600+ 266 Mhz), and will support the highest possible Socket A
speed (3200+), and the memory too (DDR 400).

Any thoughts?

Hi!

The new KT880 from VIA looks good. Would I need an Athlon Board,
nothing other than an A7V880 arise. Tops even the Nfurz2 Chipset. And
with Dual Channel you can compare to fast BX Sets... so it should be,
at least .-)
Late, but at least available. But I think some Semprons are working
too..... Not to mention the whole Athlon and Duron series, the KT880 is
capable of. If the switches (buttons) in the BIOS are working properly,
I might rethink, and build a nice Palomino (1533MHz) - GF4ti4200Ultra -
A7V880 Set.

You would be able to use your "DDR 400" and probably everything
else if you got a Socket 754 or 939 motherboard and an Athlon64
or Sempron.

There are a lot of motherboard bargains to be found for both new
and used AGP motherboards since many are madly rushing to switch
to PCI-E motherboards even though there are not yet any
significant benefits to doing so. There are also bargains to be
had on new and used single-core Athlon64s - in part due to eager
beavers who think they'll die if they don't upgrade to a
dual-core chip.

However, if even that is not in your budget, pretty much anything
in the A7N8X series would be a good choice.

True, but I want to spend as little as possible right now,
then upgrade to PCI-E down the line once I've gotten
the most out of my AGP Radeon 9800. So if the A7N8X is
good, I'll go with that!

I've been very happy with my plain jane "A7N8X" (Ultra v2.00) with ATI
Radeon 9800 Pro running since May 2003. Long story short, it's never
locked up or crashed once!

Using 3*256MB Corsair 2-2-2-6 PTLL sticks.
Unlocked Barton 2800+ @ 3200+ @ 1.70v.

Good Luck,
Ed

How did you unlock you 2800+ barton cpu is it the same with the 2600
xp barton

My Barton 2800+ (333 FSB) came multiplier unlocked from the factory, so
instead of 166x12.5 I run it @ 200 x 11 (or more).

Not sure if these links are still good, were for unlocking week 39 or
later XPs and stuff.

The Asus A7N8DX Deluxe V2 is a good pick, takes all soc A cpu's up t
3200 cpu instantly and SATA drives in raid, dual onboard LAN's and
channel o/b sound, just make sure it's a V2 board or the max it wil
take is only a 3000 cpu

I have 2 of em, good boards IMHO

Bargains are not worth the trouble, you get what you pay for
