Greetings

Have a buddy afraid to spend any money on their computer (PII mebbe 300mhz),
he likes to burn CD's and his wife likes doing large graphic apps. They
keep calling after it quits repsonding due to impatience (and 4-5 apps open
any given time) they do the 3 finger salute, or just power off, etc. It has
a micro atx form, is an old compaq of some sort. What I'd like to do, is
find a cheap, dependable motherboard for an old Duron I've got sitting
around. Appears to have a standard 20 pin power connector, 90 watt power
supply. Onboard sound and video is fine by me, and SDRAM would be preferred
memory. I'd be glad to spend a bit and make it a present to help me as much
as them. Space is tight, and 3 PCI slots would be great plenty. (or any
combo of PCI/ISA). Size is the most imprtant thing here.
Thanks
Mark

Going to have a severe problem there. A 90 watt Compaq power supply will
not handle any Socket A motherboard. So plan on replacing power supply too.
Then there could be problems with cooling. What model gateway is it? Might
just be better off going with a new small form factor or microatx
motherboard/case combination.

"Appears to have a standard 20 pin power connector"

Be careful! I would check that Compaq use standard ATX power supplies
before using this.

A case/motherboard upgrade would be best. The power supply is not going to
be big enough. Just move the drives, etc. to a new case and motherboard.
I've done this many times to upgrade an old Gateway or Compac. I've used the
MSI KM2M Combo-L, Duron processor, and a cheap Raidmax case to keep the
price under 100 bucks. It works well. The KM2M Combo can use SDRAM or DDR,
onboard video, audio and networking.

OK Guys;
Ya'll pretty much confirmed what I knew but was hoping someone had a cheaper
way around.
Will see if they'll spring for a case and I'll buy the mobo so no one spends
much, and I'll again have peace.

Thanks

Yo Bluestinger!

Where can I buy the combo you mentinoed for $100? That sounds like a good
deal to me. Did you get a fan, too?

Newegg for the processor and board. I usually get the case and fan from my
local PC shop where I can get a little discount. It comes to around 100 to
115 total. Still a good deal when upgrading from an old gateway 350mhz or
something.
