The widely spread claim in the past was that DVD-R is way more
compatible than +. However recent posts claimed some tests which were
exactly comprehensive - resulted in a slight difference with - in the
lead.

Actually other websites have said there isnt that much difference.
My personal experience --- Ive tried + on around 10 different players
including people I know who have used by disks and not one rejected
any of them . This was a Ricoh DVD+R burner 2.4x using HP, TDK and
Memorex.

I now use a NEC dual format writer and use a variety of cheap DVD-R
and it all works too. Not much difference.

Yes there are some media/burner mismatch problems - especially if you
use one of the generic type burners probably with cheapo media . If
you want to make sure read the database at DVDRhelp.

Genrally if you stick to the popular burners - NEC, maybe Liteon now ,
Pioneer, Sony etc. and dont test out any cheapo media you buy first
with small batches and you have a relatively NEW player - the older
ones tend to have more problems it should play.
Plus can anyone recommend some good software?

Depends on your burner obvously - but NERO is easy to use.

For "backing up" dvds other than just data theres DVDXcopy.

Last time I checked there was a Xpress which squished commercial DVDs
which hold way more than writables to fit on a writable.

They also have the option of not using further compression and writing
on two writables.

They have Gold and Platinum versions which incorporate more features.

I actually prefer using Dencryptor I think its called a shareware
ripper , DVD2one shareware to shrink it down and using NERO to burn.

Wow - thanks for all the information. It's been real insightful...I guess I
am leaning towards getting a cheap DVD-R based on what I have read.

You mentioned that commercial DVD's hold more than DVD-R's. I believe the
later format holds 4.7GB. How much do commericial DVD's hold?

cheers once again
