Holidays???

Not in the US, other than maybe Monday off since the 4th of July was on a
Sunday, but then the last thread was created on Tuesday. Even if the
majority of posters here were European, I thought you guys took your
month-long vacations in August, not July....

Well, normally it's actually only 3 weeks. Sometimes even less.. But they
are usually held during the period of week 28/29 - 30/31.. Myself i have 4
weeks and will return to work monday of week 31...

Oh well.. I hope it's not the beginning of the end.. I rather enjoyed this
group... ;-)

No new threads in three days. Yikes.

It definitely looks like traffic has dropped like
an anchor in water.

It seems that many more were using the MS NNTP
server than I thought.

But let us see what happen. If somebody finds out that
there are answers here, then I would expect questions
to show up.

In the US many, if not most, of the major ISP's have dropped USNET
service sometime ago. I'm not sure how many people are aware of free
or cheep alternatives?

Peter Duniho laid this down on his screen :
There has not been much traffic, if any, coming from the Microsoft
Communities portal in the last year or so. So people have been using NNTP
servers carrying Usenet from somewhere, either Microsoft's or some other.

Most likely, like me they were just directly connecting to the MS
servers. Since my ISP - Comcast totally dumped support for nntp
accounts.
It's true that ISPs in general have stopped providing their own NNTP servers.
But NNTP is still alive and well, simply outsourced. The major ISPs I'm
aware of still provide NNTP access, if not through their own servers then
through a third-party server included in their Internet service package, such
as Giganews or Supernews.

That used to be the case. But around the end of 2008, most of the
major ISP's have either completely dropped or put major restrictions (I
think verizon was limitting access to the big-8) on access.
In any case, given the relative dearth of posts that came to this newsgroup
from the Microsoft web portal, the closure of that portal surely had little
effect on the traffic here. There's a slightly more significant effect that
may have resulted from people no longer having access to the Microsoft NNTP
servers. But it surprises me to even consider that someone savvy enough to
be using an actual NNTP server would also not have the wherewithal to seek
out an alternative, given that alternatives do certainly exist.

I think it's just as likely that we're just seeing a combination of things,
such as normal seasonal variation. At least, I hope so. I hate to think
that I'd have to accept that the inefficient web forum has finally gobbled up
this newsgroup too.

Only time will tell.

Must be.

But unless the MS NNTP servers carried all groups, then I think it
would be easier for people to have gotten all groups from a single
server.

That would be a shame.

In the UK I think only one now carries news (sourced out to Highwinds)

usenet is alive but fewer new users appear to be discovering its
existence.

MS's advance notices probably did more to thin out the traffic than
anything else. It seems obvious MS wants no alternatives to using
web-based forums.

I'm afraid your fears concerning inefficient web forums will be
realized.
