So, is running Cool n Quiet a good thing?

What does it do exactly? Is it really beneficial, or just wasted overhead?

Thanks,
-Larry

When the cpu is loafing it cuts its speed and power. So, less heat, less
energy waste. cpu voltage has to be on auto in the bios. amd driver has to
be loaded. Or you can use CrystalCPUID.

Cool n Quiet if it is enabled on the motherboard slows down the fan and
even stops the fan when there is not load on the CPU. Because the fan is
not running or is running slow the fan is producing less noise. The fan
is only slowed when the cpu is generating low levels of heat and the CPU
does not require a fan running at full speed.

I'm pretty sure that that is a component of some motherboards, and not cool
n quiet.

When the CPU fan is running slower, the heatsink accumulates less dust
and doesn't require cleaning as often.

It is one of many features of the AMD 929 CPU and details can be found

What does it do exactly?

It's basically Powernow with a new marketing name. By itself, it does
nothing. Using software hooks in it, it allows the cpu to run at lower
speeds and voltages depending on how you set it up. You can set it up for
manual control, or automatic control. Manually for instance, I can tell
mine to run at [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected] (the max rated
speed of the cpu). Or I can set it for automatic scaling from a
configurable file. Here's an example.

[General]
pidfile=/var/run/cpufreqd.pid
poll_interval=2
pm_type=acpi #(acpi, apm or pmu)

I'll leave that up to you.:-)

Then the AMD website is wrong (more likely you just misinterpreted it).
CnQ has no fan control. By itself, it really does nothing. Now, used in
conjunction with a MB that's capable of fan control compared to temps, a
lower cpu speed and voltage will bring down the temps, and so the Mb fan
control will lower the fan speed. But that really has nothing to do with
CnQ (Powernow). I sure wish it did have some magic way of changing the
voltage to the fan since my MB doesn't have fan control.:-)

Actually, Cool n' Quiet/Power now is *NOT* a fan control program. It allows
the system to monitor activity and throttle both the frequency and the
voltage of the processor in accordance with the system demand. When demand
is low, the voltage and frequency drop dramatically, producing less heat,
thus your fans don't have to spin as fast (or as loud) to keep the system
cool.

The information posted by Ken is inaccurate. It does not control the fan.

what E light said + AMD's boxed fan has a thermal control built in, it
spins 3000 to 6000 rpm depending on case temp basically.
