Hi. I am very frustrated and disappointed. Not only can't I get my DVD
player and burner to work (can't install drivers) but the whole system is
slow and choppy. Now I have no way of backing up my many gigs of media and I
can't uninstall Vista! Any ideas anybody?

I (and we) have said it more than once and we'll say it again. Do not use
Vista on a production machine or a machine with critical data on it. MS
even says so. If you really insist on using Vista on a production machine,
you should at least install it on a separate partition or a different hard
drive. Even doing so, I personally still recommend you backup your data
before you get started just to be on the safe side. We also do not
recommend that you do an upgrade install of Vista, but rather a clean
install. (If you're upgrading from XP.) Heck, to this day, I still
recommend doing a clean install when upgrading to XP from an older OS. When
you're installing a new operating system (especially a beta), you should
always expect to run into problems, (and yes, especially driver related) and
you'll just never know what they will be until you actually run into them.
The Upgrade Advisor is only going to give you a very basic idea of what will
work and what will not.

The only thing I can say you can do now is if you're lucky enough to have
another computer(s) at your house and they're all hooked up to a router, you
can network them (if your network driver is working as you did not specify
which drivers aren't working) and use the other computer(s) as your backup
source.
Additionally, if you have a spare connection available in your computer, you
can plug in a hard drive to backup your files. Also, you could plug in an
external USB (or the like) hard drive and use it as your backup source.
If you cannot do any of the above, as a last resort, try:
(everybody will think this is really a crazy idea, but I actually had to do
this to one person's computer once in an emergency situation; it's not going
to work for everybody as you'll see below...)
Download Knoppix off of the Internet, which can be run off of the CD ROM and
not the hard drive. The only thing is, if your burner is the only drive you
have, you will be out of luck. Another problem is that if you don't have
another computer, you'll have to use someone else's computer since your
burner is not working. You'll also want a high-speed Internet connection.
If you have to drives, however, you're possibly in luck. Knoppix has a
built-in CD burning tool, and you can use that to hopefully burn your CD's
and DVD's. I don't know how well it handles DVD's, but I know it can handle
CD's fine and have burned data CD's with it before. Now if the Knoppix
doesn't pick up your hardware, which I've seen it do on occasion, I don't
know what else I can say except for you to hope that someone else comes
along to assist you.

Thank you very much for the advice. I know I am a bonehead for doing the
upgrade and not backing up first, but when I get a new OS, I'm like a kid who
can't wait for Christmas. All logic and patience goes out the window.

I think I can figure out the network transfer, or if not I will try the
flash-drive USB option.

Again, thanks.

It was not Christmas, it was Halloween.

I know the feeling...

I noticed choppyness with my first install. After changing my video card the
choppyness went away.

I noticed some choppiness, too. Then I realized I was actually watching a
Brave game...

The Braves defense reminds me of Michael Jackson. They both wear a glove on
one hand for no apparent reason.

The one glove is for the microphone. Just like a pair of driving gloves for
both hands. It looks cool.

What a bizarre question!

OK, well, MJ may not exactly have a criminal record as he was found not
guilty, but even being suspected of such unsavory activities is bad enough.
