So Do we really need sp3?

Can't we just stay with sp2?
Will Microsoft continue to give security updates to sp2?
It seems that there really is no changes if you have been keeping your
computer up to date now- so why would you need sp3? unless you were an
administrator that needed heavy duty networking because after all I have
read that is basically what is updated?

Opinions?

In the not so distant future you will require SP3 in order to receive
updates/patches etc..

Why would anybody *want* to stay with SP2? Or SP1 for the matter?

All machines that I have updated to SP3 run so much smoother than
before, and I have had not the slightest problem with any of the updates.

Naturally Microsoft will give up support for SP2 within a certain
period, but that should *not* be the reason to update to SP3 :)

Well, until either Microsoft or the different vendors of wireless adapters
come up with solutions that prevent the loss of connectivity to many users
who DO install SP3 -- including me on one computer -- I can think of a very
good reason. :->

Just curious, Alan, what type wireless adapter do you run? I have a home
network consisting of 2 pc's - each using a Linksys WUSB11 ver.2.6 wireless
adapter (older than dirt) and I have had no problem on either pc since
installing SP3. Maybe it is a particular manufacturer which isn't
compatible with SP3?

I do know I had previously had many problems with my Logitech WebCams and
Event Viewer errors during use of SP2 - but with SP3, there are no longer any
errors with my Logitech installations. Postings in Logitech's forums had
gone on for two years with many people having problems - but a signigicant
number of them now report no errors since installing SP3. So, guess there is
some good and some bad with SP3 - depends on the software installed on a
particular pc? Can't blame you for being upset that your wireless adapter
didn't work.

Hi JohnBurns,

In my case, while I had connectivity issues on my newer computer -- a Dell
Dimension E520 using a Netgear 802.11g adapter -- my almost 7 year old Dell
Dimension 2300 with a Netgear 802.11b adapter has had no connectivity issues
at all using SP3.

Since I wrote my earlier post, I opened a ticket for free support with
Microsoft by going to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

After a couple of hours on chat with a great Microsoft Tech, I now have BOTH
SP3...and wireless connectivity.

I'm still using Wireless Zero rather than the Netgear Smart Wizard to
control the network, but that's all I ever could use under SP2 also.

Something that the tech had me do differently than I did on my own last week
before installing SP3 was to use MSCONFIG to uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI,
Process WIN.INI and Load Startup Items in the Selective Startup portion of
the General Tab. The only two boxes I left checked were Load System Services
and Use Original Boot.ini.

Then I went to the Services Tab and put a tick mark in the Hide All
Microsoft Services check box. Whatever was left, I then clicked on the
Disable All radio button.

THEN, I began the SP3 installation. After the SP3 installed and rebooted I
already had connectivity without manually trying to connect. He had me do a
second reboot to make sure I had connectivity, which I did.

Finally, I went into MSCONFIG and selected Normal Startup, and once more
rebooted.

All is fine now. :->

Excellent - thanks for sharing that experience.
