There seems to be absolutely no documentation on how to get rid of this so
called "smart-selecting" of words and phrases in Internet Explorer. I do a
lot of coding and if I want to only select one or two letters of a word, I
should be able to.

PLEASE if anyone's figured this one out, let me know. I've scoured the
internet for a solution and came up empty. I'm on Windows XP Professional
with IE 6.

Thanks

Hi Calipoop :-)

Ahmm......not really sure what you mean by "smart-selecting of words", but,
to go out on a limb here.....I am going to assume that you mean the
Auto-Complete. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. ;-)

Try the following and see it it helps.

Disable Autocomplete

Tools>Internet Options>Content tab>click Autocomplete
Uncheck all the boxes for features you don't want to use
Click Apply
Then OK

or.............

Try this:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#AutoComplete

With no programs open,
Run REGEDIT and make your way to this key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\SPW]
Export that key (Registry> Export.) If you you wish to undo the change,
doubleclicking on that REG file will restore the original registry key.
Then delete the SPW key.
Restart the computer.

Delete all Addresses in Dropdown box

To delete ALL Addresses in the Drop Down list, go here and
download and install Mike Burgess' DelTypedURL.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

See below for Selective Delete

You can also get DelSearchMRU.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelSearchMRU.inf

Note: this does not remove entries entered via AutoComplete. To remove
hidden AutoComplete entries in History:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#AutoComplete

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure that ALL instances of IE6 are CLOSED before
you do the install of this (these) .inf files. Otherwise the "old" entries
will just be re-written back to the Registry when you close IE.

A nice alternative just for selective or all Address (not Search) history
maintenance is EditURLs, here:
http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/
Here also, you must close ALL instances of IE6 for the deletions to "take".
Recommended

and.....

Disable History - Don't want to keep history

Tools>Internet Options>General tab
In the Number of days to keep History window, set it to zero

Then on General tab > Click the Clear History tab
Click Delete Files tab
Click Delete Cookies tab
Click Apply

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

goto say select from word wrong in your post, to the word
really... but you only want to select eally out of the
word really - it wont let you - it smart selects the whole
word.

Very anoying - Unfortunatly i dont know how to disable it
either.

Don't try to drag your mouse to make a partial word selection.
Workaround is the same as it has always been:
Click one end, press Shift, Click the other end.

Hi Robert, thanks for the post. I coulda sworn I had tried that out before
and it didn't work, but low and behold, that solution does work. I guess
it's easy to get confused since you don't actually see the cursor where the
first click is.

Still, I wish there was an option to disable that smart selecting. When
working with code and all the ; and ( and " etc., that smart select gets
ridiculous with its selections. There should really be a way to disable that
so one doesn't need to involve the shift key. I don't remember it always
being like that... or was it?
