sneaking my laptop onto the network...

Allright here is what i am trying to do....

Where I work has a small LAN with 9 computers attached to it. I am
trying to get my laptop to be able to share this network. I dont
necessarily want to fill my boss in on it though, although he probably
would not mind...anyway. My pc is located in a remote building
(across the driveway)...
Here is what I have.

cable modem--->Linksys router--|-->various workgroup stations
|
|-->Intellinet ethernet switch--->my pc

The main router is located in the main building where the majority of
the workstations are located.

The switch is in the same building I am in across the driveway and it
has like three other computers that it feeds.

I think that is clear. What I am wondering is if I can hook something
up to the CAT5 feed that run to my pc, like a router or something,
that will enable me to plug in my laptop.

Ok, I actually tried this and it did not work. I dont know if the
router I used is any good though. Anyway, I tried to actually unpluged
my work machine and hooked the laptop into it to see if that would
work. I loaded what I thought was all the appropriate information from
my pc to the laptop to try and make the network think they were the
same. This is what I configured:

computer name
workgroup
ip address
subnet mask
default gateway
all the same DNS servers

The physical address is the only thing I can think of that I might not
have loaded. I found most of that information when I went to local
area connection status then support then details. I just can not find
that missing piece that puts it all together. I am sure I have left
out information that will help you all help me so if I did just ask
or offer solutions and I wil try them.

Thanks,

Adam

By the way, I do have administrator status on my work machine.

You have started off in the right direction.
Although I have reservation about not leaving the IP
address to be dynamic. You should try that.
Look at your work computer to find out the TCP/IP
settings, and copy them to your laptop.
It is possible that there is MAC address filtering in the
Linsys router (I would do that) to stop a non-work
related pc from connecting to the internet.
But if you have the correct workgroup name you should at
least be able to share files on the local network...

Hi Adam,

I would strongly recommend that you ask your boss for permission and if
he/she agrees then talk to your local IT person for the correct settings to
connect to your companies network.

Hmmm, well I asked the boss if I can hook into the network and he said
yes with two exceptions. First, I have to do it myself because he is
not going to be billed for it. Second, if I screw something up, it
comes out of my check! He is a pretty cool boss but I dont think he
was joking on that one!...lol

Allright, am I able to get my laptop on the internet and intranet from
the feed to my computer using a router to split the connection? I
mean, I am just trying to figure out the next step. Do I need to
access the server to give my laptop an address like all the other
workstations here? I suppose if all I can do is access my local
terminal then that is fine but I want to figure out how to give it the
same acces as the rest of the workstations. If there is a really good
tutorial on the net somewhere that I can read I would do that. I know
I am asking a lot of Noobie questions.
Thanks,

Adam

P.S. I am looking up all I can about MAC address to try and figure
that one out.
