I would like make a default setting that keeps Snap to
Grid truned off.

As it is I have to manually turn it off every time I open
PowerPoint.

It seems to me I stumbled across a method once upon a
time, but have forgotten how to on a newer machine.

Thanks!

PPT 2003 has a user setable option in the Grid settings dialog to save
the current settings as the default. I'm not sure if that's new to
2003 or if it existed in 2000 as well.

I have PowerPoint 2002, and in the same place I can set Snap to Grid on
or off, I have a button that says "Set as Default." I'm looking in the
Draw menu (which is located on the Draw Toolbar) and choosing Grids and
Guides. If I just change the setting, it works once. If I change the
setting and click Set as Default, I assume it will change it for all
time.
