Snail mail in Outlook!

Deb M.

For some reason, Outlook 2002 has begun to SEND mail
extremely slowly. I use a cable modem connection, XP
Home Edition and Norton Anti-Virus for checking sent and
received mail. I have tried various settings to see if I
can speed things up. Until the last week or so, things
were working fine.

I do use WindowBlinds and have read that this may cause
some programs, most notably IE, to slow down but read
nothing related to this happening in Outlook. I did
uninstall WindowBlinds to see if it might make a
different in send speed but it did not.

Used to be, I'd hit the send button, and ZOOM - it was
sent. Now it takes up to 4-5 minutes to send a small
message. I watch the status bar and it seems to zip
along to up to 65% completed then drags on and on. Even
after Outlook says 100% completed, Norton kicks in and
its little window pops up and sticks forever until
finally the message is scanned and sending is completed.
This also never used to happen - it was so fast that
unless I really looked I never really saw the Outlook
status for sending or Norton's.

I did a search on this group but did not discern a
message regarding this particular problem.

Any ideas? Thanks for any assistance.

Have you tried it in Outlook safe mode? To start Outlook
in safe mode start Outlook from the Run command and add
the /safe switch behind it. This will disable all add-
ons. You can also check if the problem still occurs when
you have your virusscanner and/or firewall disabled. If
this doesn't happen update that software.

Hope this helps!

I had a similar problem after installing a firewall.
I noticed that every time I logged into email I would get a
"chirp" alarm from my firewall sw. After checking the source
(IP#) I contacted my provider and found out they ping my PC to
verify it is me logging on. Mail still worked, but the sending
was very slow, just like yours.
If this is the cause, you may want to open the port they ping
or permit access by that IP address only.
What I have done is give that IP addy access only when I'm
sending mail - works for me.
