When I use the smtp server which is on the windows 2000
pro disk, how does smtp know which server to telnet
into at port 25.

For example if I want to send an email to (e-mail address removed)
I can't just telnet yahoo.com 25
Please advise!
Thanks

You send mail to your SMTP server. It does a DNS lookup to find out what the
MX records are for the domain you're sending to, and sends the mail to the
appropriate server.

Review Microsoft's KB article at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308161. You can
also enter file:\\%systemroot%\help\mail.chm in any Address bar
(Explorer, Taskbar, wherever) to open a local .chm help file telling you
how to manage their SMTP service; do a search on "DNS" in the help file.
