SMTP Server Refuses to Start

I just just taken over a Dell server and it has been known to be flakey over
the last few months.
Have fixed most of the probs by applying current updates, however the SMTP
server refuses to start. Nothing else seems to be using the port and cannot
see any conflicting service running. Installed and un-installed the SMTP
server several times now.
IIS5 works well and handles all the web requests.
Anyone any ideas why the SMTP server will not start.

Have you tried a different port number - just to be sure? What error
messages are you getting?

Tried several other ports.
Only error message is:- Service did not start in a reasonable time.
Very useful :)
Think may be a dynamite job!
