I've been reading alot of conflicting information on the
use of SMTP and IP based Site Links. Does anyone have an
official MS article on which protocol uses less bandwidth?

I was under the impression SMTP used less bandwidth, but
now I am reading incorrectly..

Can anyone advise please.

SMTP is asynchronous whereas RPC is synchronous therefore SMTP will use less
bandwidth in that respect. In a direct size comparison I do not know which
would be the most bandwidth hungry but the question is something of an
irrelevance. You should always use RPC replication unless you have a
pressing need to use SMTP instead. eg on slow or unreliable network links or
where you are using an old WAN link that cannot support RPC.

Also keep in mind that an SMTP link will not work between domain controllers
in different domains.
