I am using Vistas Winmail ( not "livemail" ) and I use it for a hotmail
account. Don't tell me it does not work, because it did all the time
succesfully in and out for months. Hotmail is not possible via pop3 is a
myth.It also works via Outlook Express on xp.

I needed to format the laptop and reinstall vista, so am starting from new.

I have installed every Servicepack and Update available to the OS via
automatic updates.

Account : Username (e-mail address removed) and the Live ID password ( same as for
messenger and so - it works ) -

Server : pop3.live.com / secure port 995
SMTP.live.com / secure port 25

"authenticate with same settings as pop inbox"

Now the inbox works - it loads all my mails that are in my msn.com account.

But when i want to send a mail it gives me this :

Unknown error. Account: 'pop3.live.com', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Server answers: '421 Cannot establish SSL, SSL_connect error
336031996', Port: 25, Secure (SSL): yes, Servererror:
421, error number 0x800CCC67

It was Avast 5.. antivirus. I needed to stop the mail protection. My mail
went out.

In version 4.8 before this was never a problem..

So. : not Microsofts fault.

Try changing the SMTP Port number from 25 to 587 on the advanced tab of your
accounts properties.

Live.com Settings:

Server names and ports:
POP3 = pop3.live.com Port = 995
SMTP = smtp.live.com Port = 587

Checkboxes you need to check include:

Server Tab: "My server requires authentication" (Click "Settings" button
also and fill in "Log on Using" email address - *** but do NOT check the
checkboxes there . . . .)

Advanced Tab: BOTH outgoing and incoming - "This server requires a secure
connection (SSL)"

General Tab (if desired but generally recommended): "Include this account
when receiving mail or synchronizing"

Should work - if you get errors post the entire error message (cut-n-paste)
for further assistance.

I realize that you've fixed this, but the Port 25 setting is going to give
you problems. You *will* run into networks where Port 25 is blocked except
for access to their home server, which probably won't be yours. Change it
to whatever else the provider allows.
