SMTP Extension Error Message with McAfee Antivirus

I am running Windows XP and MS Outlook 2002, with McAfee Antivirus installed.
My ISP is SBC Yahoo DSL. I have my SBC Yahoo DSL email configured so I can
use MS Outlook as my primary email application interface.

I have recently been getting the following McAfee pop-up error message:
“McAfee Virus Scan detected that you are using an unsupported SMPT extension
from your e-mail client. McAfee Virus Scan might not be able to detect
viruses in your out going mail messages. To ensure that your e-mail messages
are scanned, you must turn off the SMTP extension in your e-mail client."

How do I turn off my "SMTP extension"?

Thanks, in advance,
Brian

You might need to contact McAfee or your service provider for this.
"Something" has possibly been added by your provider (unless this is just a
raw POP3 Yahoo account).
Alternatively, you could disable the McAfee email integration. You would
still be protected when an attempt is made to open a file with a virus and
might, generally, have less problems (antivirus email add-ins can often
cause issues)

You need to ask McAfee, since their program is creating the error message.

Having the same problem. I contacted McAfee through their web support
chat. The tech couldn't tell me why this error started appearing, and
wanted me to just select the option to hide the error. I asked for
more info about the error and whether or not my outgoing mail was
going to be scanned, but I was just asked to hide the error. I am
runing WinXP Home with SP2 and Outlook 2003. I started noticing the
problem when a McAfee update replaced the Windows Security Center.

The reason is because Windows XP contains an updated (or at least a
reversioned) Outlook Express and whatever McAfee's doing to test the version
of Outlook Express doesn't check for the new version number.

In some respects, I'd go along with just hiding the error by disabling the
McAfee email integration. It can tend to cause issues anyway and you will
still be protected if you try and open an attachment that has a virus.
