SMTP Auth and Windows Mail

Hi,
I'm having problems sending mail through my mail server that requires
authentication. I've done packet captures and the dialog indicates that
Windows Mail isn't even attempting to log in. Strangely, Windows Mail
doesn't work on either my Vista Ultimate or my Vista Home setup. I can get
Outlook 2007 on Vista Ultimate to authenticate and send mail but not Outlook
2003 under Vista Home. I have disabled my anti-virus program on both systems
(and flat out uninstalled it on the Vista Ultimate machine) since I've seen
suggestions here that A/V may cause authentication not to work (which seems
wrong to me). No joy. Anyone with any thoughts as to what I may be missing?
It's really the Vista Home system (that will need A/V even if mail isn't
being checked) that I need to get working. I'm using the other as a
comparison point.

Thanks,
Ric

No need to do packet capture since Windows Mail (like OE)
has server command logging capabilities. Go to Tools, Options,
Advanced, Maintenance, Troubleshooting.

I've never seen SMTP Auth fail to work, so I'm at a loss as
to what to advise you.
