smooth scrolling

After 2 1/2 years of owning my first computer I have solved with delight
and astonishment the problem that when I use any method to scroll a web page
the whole screen jerks in large sections .
I looked through the ControlPanel in Windows XP Home Edition and unchecked
all the options in each folder that I thought I did not need . Either I found
the option I needed to uncheck to stop the jerkiness or I cleared enough
memory .
I have 512MB's of memory and before the jerkiness problem was solved there
was 305MB's of memory available . After I had been through the control panel
unchecking boxes there was 350MB's of memory available .
The option where I can select the number of lines to scroll when I scroll
with the mouse nor the option to choose smooth scrolling had any effect
previously .
Has anyone a clue to how I solved the problem .
I will install a new graphics card next week I want to have the solution
ready .

Does this mean you know how to do it or you want someone to give you an answer on how to do it?? If you know then share it and if you don't please rephrase your question as it is very confusing. Of course, if english is not your native language then this reponse will not be understood by you.

Go Sytem Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings and uncheck all (or most)
of check boxes - except the last (Use visual styles...) if you want to keep
the XP looks.

maybe it is the Smooth Scrolling option but I tried unchecking the option
several times before and that did not change anything .

Guess I got you - you had jerking window movements around before, tweaked
around unchecking this or that check box and the issue was resolved; now,
the same issue reoccurred and you don't remember exactly how you fixed it
the first time.

Might be the mouse, the graphic card/drivers, poor system performance;
canceling some options only hides or alleviates temporarily the problem -
the symptomps will aggravate over time.

1. if the mouse is USB and/or wireless, try updating the drivers, changing
USB or use PS/2 - check the scroll wheel as well. See if you can scroll
using the keyboard arrow keys, Page Down key etc.
2. since you'll be getting a new graphics card, don't bother wasting time
with this one; the issue will be solved.
3. poor system ressources - try scrolling in Safe Mode (when the machine has
a minimal load of apps); if that solves it, see what apps in Normal Mode hog
your system - might be IRQ conflicts as well.

I had 512MB's of memory installed and I bought 1G of ADATA of memory that
was available at a very good price and I kept all the Windows XP Home Edition
frills running on the computer and the jerky scrolling has stopped forever !
