Smooth Scroll

Something has changed in my XP-Home machine -- I think perhaps it was when I
installed a Microsoft wireless optical mouse a month or two back.

When I scroll down a page (in IE for example) it goes in jerks now. It seems to
me that it used to move smoothly in increments that were some small fraction of
a character height. Now the smallest possible wheel movement produces a jump
that the system says is one line high, but typically is actually more like two
or three lines on a web page.

I've trolled through all the settings I can conjure up, through the XP Help
system searching for "smooth scroll" and through the Microsoft web site. I've
played with the Settings>Mouse controls and the Microsoft Power Toys. Somehow I
see nothing that references setting the mouse wheel for smooth scrolling.

Is a smooth scroll available in XP, or was it provided to me previously by some
mouse driver that happened to be installed or did it never exist?

Thanks...

I do have that option set. And just now I played with removing it which made no
difference in how the scroll wheel acts. And then I added it back in which also
made no difference.

One can also click down on the scroll wheel and I'm sure you're familiar with
the action. It puts an up/dn icon on the page and just moving the mouse up or
down a bit scrolls the window. In that scroll mode it is doing what I would
call smooth scrolling, but somehow the normal wheel scroll itself just goes in
jumps.

Perhaps it's psychological? I reinstalled my old mouse and it also moves the
screen in jumps, but somehow that seems ok since the scroll wheel also has
detents and the screen jumps once for each detent. The new Microsoft mouse has
no detents and feels very smooth to your finger -- yet the screen still jumps.
It results in some cognitive dissonance perhaps.

If I can't find a way to make it scroll smoothly I'll have to chuck the mouse
and go back to the old one.

If you installed the Intellipoint software for your mouse, remove it and see
what happens. I found that software to make the mouse do crazy things.

there's typically a setting for the wheel like 'how many lines to scroll
for each wheel click.' i would think that yours defaulted to 3 lines.
