Hello,

Has anyone tried the Smiley Vault 1.0 program that is listed on
NoNags?

*Ahem* Dan, three identical posts?

At any rate, I just installed this "program" and looked at it. What it
is is a huge and comprehensive collection of "smileys" and some very
poorly linked html files. Not really a program at all. Uninstalled
easily though. My friend will like it I'm sure.

That was damn decent of you John considering this particular foo' didnt even
have the
decency to reply to your original answer. Were'nt you worried about viruses
and things?

Not at all. The "program" is in fact listed at Nonags, a fact I
verified before I went to the home page (which I got from Nonags) and
downloaded it. And to be extra safe, I scanned the download.

but...I have a folder of
emoticons, but have no idea how to put one in an e-mail.
Excellent

I just looked,
I've got 94 of the things. Of course thats not a lot. One of the
people who post here has a page with thousands of them.
I'm using Thunderbird. If I attach it a a file that wont put it in the
right place right?

Correct. You want to attach files? Attach them in your posts to binary
groups. Never in text groups where loads of servers will strip them
anyway.

Um...so how would I put one in? Not that I would...just curious

Nooooo, of course you wouldn't.

Sure. If you wouldn't, then you don't need to know, do you?

I am sorry about the 3 identical posts. I have Cox Cable and sometimes
the posts don't go through. I appreciate that you (John Corliss)
checked the program and found out is not that great. I am sorry about
the posts and not getting back to anyone.

Thanks again!

First things first, a smiley is nothing but an image (usually .GIF). So, one
of the easier ways would be to embed it into the email. For that to happen,
your email MUST be in HTML format.

In TB, first make sure you are composing your email in HTML format.

Open a new COMPOSE window by clicking the WRITE icon.

OPTIONS > FORMAT > HTML ONLY -- this option will send your email in HTML
only
OPTIONS > FORMAT > PLAIN & RICH TEXT(HTML) -- this option sends both formats
in the same email allowing the recipient to choose (according to his
settings) which version of the email to display ; this option also increases
the size of your email.

Anyway, now you just need to click INSERT > Image and navigate to one of
your desired smiley images and select it. There are further options
available here.

Note that TB also has a button (the last one) on the formatting toolbar
which allows one to insert the text equivalent of smileys like : - ) or
; - ) [ you will however view a graphic, but this graphic isn't embedded in
the email!]. Email clients with support for displaying these emoticons may
instead display the appropriate graphic smiley. Outlook Express along with
the OE-QUoteFix add-on or the Fidolook extension will do so as will TB.

Don't know about other clients so I really can't say...

Again... the Net world is divided among the purists who believe that TEXT is
the way to go as email was meant to be used to communicate with people. No
doubt TEXT is safer than HTML. Others feel HTML if used correctly can
enhance the look and feel of the message that they're trying to send
across....

Joe,
Correct. Attaching will only put the graphic at the end of the
document. By the way, you shouldn't send binary files like that
emoticon to text only newsgroups like this one. Personally, I couldn't
care less, but others will flame you for doing so.
I've never used Thunderbird, but I do use Mozilla which Thunderbird
is derived from. In it, I put a graphic in an email (to friends and
family, not usenet posts) by clicking on "Insert" then "Image", then
browse to the graphic (which a smiley is). Note that the cursor has to
be in the text body area, not in the subject line or address header
fields when you do this.

Mozilla comes with it's own set of smileys if you're into that, and
they're available in a dropdown from the formatting toolbar.

Dan,
I used to have that problem and contacted my ISP to complain about
it. Luckily, they're very responsive and corrected the situation by
actually getting a different newsfeed!

As for that "program", if you're into emoticons it worth downloading
because of the enormous collection (over 1000) that it provides. You
can simply copy them all to another location than the "Programs"
folder and then uninstall the program.

You simply put it in like this :-)

The recipient decides which email client he wants to use, what font and
background color he wants, and how to display such smileys.
That is not up to you to decide for him, so you should not try to force
it on him with some clever trick.

Don't attach files or post in html unless you are sure the recipient
wants it.

In newsgroups you cannot use anything but text, but you asked about
email so maybe that is extraneous information.
Some newsreaders though, have similar support for displaying smileys,
but again, it is up to each reader to decide how he wants the text
displayed. You can only use these kinds of text smileys ;-) and the
reader decides if those should be displayed in any other way than as
simple text symbols.

To the good _You_ may decide how you want other people's emails
and newsgroup messages displayed in _your_ computer. You can use all
kinds of nice pictures instead of simple text smileys, if you choose the
right email and news clients and set them up as you want them to work.

Smileys are a matter of opinion. This poster above, Joe, doesn't
believe in smileys very much. I happen to love to send to family and
friends very much and they all love the emails I send to them on esp.
on special occasions that have stats and animated gifs and smileys.
I've asked them all and they all love it. So use your best judgment
and ignore what others tell you you should do. Yes, when dealing with
newsgroups and public messages, most assuredly one usu. shouldn't send
in html unless it's a graphics group or something that focuses on that
type of thing. But who you email to that is friend or family and how
you email is your own business.

Good luck!

Thanks guys....I wont use any here. When I put my web page back up I
may use a few as decoration. And I do like to collect them. Some
people have spent a lot of time making nice ones.
