I've forgotten how I created this on my other machine that uses WIN98SE.
Whenever I press this combination of keys, :-).... I get a smiley face. How
do I do that in XP?

Is that what you mean or do you actually want to see a little smiley face.
I do but I use Outlook Express with QuoteFix which is a program that will
do that and lots more, it puts in the things that Microsoft left out of
OE.

PS: Don't have the URL to hand but do a Google search and you should be
able to find it.

you can go to Smiley Central and download Hope this helps

Just out of curiosity, do you mean that this happens in
Word, or Outlook, or what program on your Win98 computer.
In Office XP there's a way to get it to automatically
convert. Let me know if that's what you mean, and I can
tell you how.

Cheers,
E.

I've got that one as well but it means you have to send in HTML instead of
plain text for it too work, and in the NG's I only receive and reply in
plain text.

Did you use OE-Quotefix on your other machine?

ebeck, both! On my WIN98SE machine I can create a smiley face image in Word
or Outlook. I remember doing something to associate those keys with that
face but I don't remember what. Anyway, it's the XP that's the target now.
PLease let me know how.

:) works in Word/Outlook for me on XP

There are plug-ins, many have spyware attached. Google for
"smiley icon"

John.... spyware.... I've never given this much thought. 1) Is this a big
issue?
2) How does one know if "spyware" is installed?
3) What's the objective of spyware if piggy-backed upon something like an
inocent smiley face icon?

Spyware can track what you do on-line, it may report what
sites you visit, the better to target you for ad popups and
spam, it may even be a keylogger which will copy and send
your passwords and bank account data to someone for their
use.

Two good programs to get and they are free...
SpyBot Search and Destroy from www.safer-networking.org
and Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com
These will detect many types of evil programs and cookies
and remove them. When you do the download, don't forget to
run their updates, just like viruses, spyware mutates.

Also be sure to run a firewall and keep your anti-virus
current.

Hi John,
Sorry for the late reply. I hope you get this.

In Word XP for instance under Tools-->AutocorrectOptions
on the AutoCorrect tab you'll see a scrollable frame at
the bottom. If you scroll down just a bit you should see
that :) will be replace with a face if you have this
turned on. If the 'replace text as you type' box is
unchecked, just check this off and it will work. You can
also delete items from the list if it's correcting things
you don't want corrected.

In any case, this will do what you want for word
documents, and Outlook email if you use Word as your
email editor.

Let me know if you have any questions on this.

Cheers,
E.
