SMB/NetBIOS slow over high speed WAN (T3/45mb) with 120ms RT

Hello,
I have a high speed WAN link (45mb), but it's to the UK and I get 120ms
response time. I've noticed that SMB/NetBIOS activities are VERY SLOW.
Many complaints... To open up a shared directory takes 10-15 seconds,
accessing a 100K file takes 20-30 seconds, etc. There is little
utilization on the link.

FTP, SCP, etc run very quickly.

We tried bumping up TCP window size -- this helped with FTP, but Windows
file sharing is STILL VERY SLOW.

I assume NetBIOS is the problem. Is there any way to tune NetBIOS on the
client PC and/or server to reduce the chatiness of NetBIOS?

Any other ideas? This stuff should scream, in my opinion with a 45mb
link...

Thank you.

Mike

We had similar problems and switched to using our Linux
FTP environment for anything that required distributed
WAN connectivity over high-speed high-latency links.

I really wish there was a solution for this as it makes
our transfers a little more complex, but we could not
deal with the speed issues.

We've tried all of the tweaks you suggest below but still
the problem persisted.

Microsoft really needs to answer this one. Are there any
tweaks that will speed this up? I have the same problem
also, but there have been no answers so far.

I have seen responses to this thread in Google, but MS
obviously did not like them since they have been deleted
on their board.
