SMARTSHADER effects removed by ATI?

I've been trying to use the SMARTSHADER "bloom" effect described here:

However, none of the SMARTSHADER effects work for me anymore. I'm
using a Radeon 9800 Pro, and you used to be able to select SMARTSHADER
effects in the Catalyst configuration. But there's no longer a
SMARTSHADER effects menu in Catalyst 6.*, so did ATI the functionality
from their drivers?

The menu is still in ATi Tray Tools, but none of the effects work. I tried
both the preloaded and the Beyond3D effects, in both D3D and OpenGL, to no
avail. Using an X1900 with Cat 6.5 Chuck drivers.

Interestingly, as recently as Cat 5.13, ATi was having issues with the
Smartshader effects being stuck in the CCC preview box.
