Hi

There is no DOS under XP, so there is no reason to run smartdrv. What are
you trying to do?

Neither Smartdrv nor MS-DOS exist on a WinXP computer. What,
specifically, are you trying to accomplish?

You'll find it on dos 5.0 and later disks and or win9x installation media.

How to run it for what?

Nowhere. XP has neither DOS nor smartdrv.

What are you trying to accomplish?

I am wanting to run winnt from the cd and it says it would be faster to run
smartdrv
I just ran winnt.exe from the CD and it says it was unable to install
Windows Boot Loader. It goes on to say make sure the drive is formatted and
not damaged. I ran scandisk on the drive and although it took 3 hours, it
came up with no errors.

You might try adding to your boot floppy autoexec.bat
---------Begin File------------
A:\smartdrv.exe /q
---------End File-------------

Add to your config.sys
--------Begin File------------
device=A:\himem.sys
BUFFERS=99
--------End File-------------

My computer crashed and I am trying to reinstall XP upgrade. I cant run
setup from the CD Rom, it says it cant run from DOS, so I am trying other
things. I am wondering if I somehow got a boot sector virus. I am only an
amateur at computers but trying to save myself some money. I know there are
files on the C drive, i just cant get it to boot. I may have to install 98
and then XP....

This article may help.

I tried to reinstall 98 and after a clean scan i got a message saying...
Message SU0013
"Setup cannot create files on your startup drive and cannot set up windows
98. If you have HPFS or NTFS you must create an MS-DOS boot partition. If
you have LANtastic server or Superstar compression disable it before running
Setup"
However i was going to create a DOS partition and it said it was already
created. It was around 38 gigs. Is this the part where someone tells me i
need to fdisk and reformat? I don't know what else to do at this point....

Why not? What happens when you try? Is the BIOS set to boot from the CD?

You should boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted,
then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

Sounds like the primary active partition is NTFS. You may have created an
extended fat32 partition but win9x also needs to write files to the system
partition which is the first primary active partition.

If you're trying to repair I'd try the;
Method 2: Reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP
CD
in the article I pointed you to.

If you're just trying to clean install then to do a clean install boot the
Windows XP install CD-Rom. When you get to the point, delete the existing
NTFS and or other partitions found. After you delete the partition(s) abort
the install, then again restart the pc booting the CD-Rom to avoid
unexpected drive letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-043.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-049.mspx

You can also do a parallel install to the extended fat32 partition you may
have created when you attempted to install win9x.. Boot the Windows XP
install CD-Rom and choose to install to the unallocated space or the
extended fat32 partition you created. This would allow you to at least
recover your data prior to a clean install.

*BOOT* using the Windows XP installation CD. It is bootable. You will need
to configure your BIOS boot drive sequence to include the CD drive to boot
from it if not setup that way already.

I finally got it to boot from the CD, i forgot i had to change the order in
the bios,,,sorry, if i knew all i needed to know i would come here for help
and advice.
My system crashed when my wife close down a session of word. The screen went
white and it frooze. When i rebooted, it started looking for Win98 files.
Scanreg, himm.sys, bdlbuff.sys and ifhlp.sys, my spelling may not be exactly
correct with thoses names.
Anyhow, i am now at the XP Professional Setup screen. Is it best to try and
repair, or just let it reinstal? If it looks for any 98 files can i direct
it to the 98 cd? thanks

Yes, i got that far, and it is asking if i want to set up windows, or i want
to repair a Win XP installation.
I have had XP on this machine before and I was wondering if choosing repair
does a nice job or should i just set it up again....thanks....
