Smart Panel cannot find scanner

I have an Epson Perfection 1650 Photo scanner, and the Epson Smart Panel
software that has worked well for years. All of a sudden I began to get
errors referring to the registry, and Smart Panel wouldn't open right, nor
the scanner through it.

So I reinstalled Smart Panel from the CD, and it opens fine with no errors.
But when I try to use the individual features, they can't find the scanner:
Copy Utility says ""scanner cannot be detected", Copy to File says "Unable
to access scanner". The "select device" window has only one choice, which is
Epson TWAIN 5, as always.

I went to the Epson website and DLed the updated TWAIN driver (I had used
the non-updated one fine up to last week), no help. I can use the scanner OK
from the Windows Photo Scanner Wizard, and according to Device Manager
everything is working OK. So it must be the software (?).

What can I do to make the Smart Panel recognize that the scanner is present?

Thanks, Pflu

Are you using XP? If so you could try system restore, going back to
before the error occurred if possible.
