SMART monitor that is free and has alarms

I would like to put my drives (IDE and SATA) into mobile racks but think
it'd be prudent to have ongoing hdd monitoring and alarms for
temperature. I've never fooled with this before. Some racks have it
built in, but I'm also looking at SMART monitors. However none I've
looked at work very well

DTemp
looks a bit out of date, didn't try

Adenix S.M.A.R.T. Explorer
worked but couldn't get it to check automatically at intervals and warn
if overheating

PassMark DiskCheckup
worked but couldn't get it to check automatically at intervals and warn
if overheating

Motherboard Monitor 5
Has not been able to detect either hdd; ie didn't work

Any other suggestions?

Think twice about this - if you don't actually need the mobility, save your
dosh and go RAID 1 instead if you want reliability.

The air flow in these devices tends to be more constricted, so they have
fans... more noise. The small fans tend to clog up quickly and fail.

However having temp monitoring is a good idea... If you find source code,
let me know.

Hi and thanks

I made one test, on a Vantec MRK-103F, and it's little fan is almost
silent. So that may not be an issue for all racks.

The removable notion has appeal because I can remove the disks and if I
ever come home from a trip and find the pc has gone missing, the disks
provide for a simple rebuild.

But I'm not 100% that I'll do removable disks. It would enlarge the
group of devices to pick from if I could find a SMART monitor software
that handles the overheat warning aspect.
