Hello,
I have purchased a compaq presario, running the home
edition of Windows xp on Internet Explorer 6.0 Recently
when I logged on, I recieved the following error msg:
SMART Failure Predict on Primary Master ST380020A

It appears to take me to a CMOS/BIOS screen. If I select
F2 option, it bypasses the error message and appears to
allow normal functionality. If I select the F10 option,
then I am taken to the BIOS screen where I can make
changes.
I took the following steps toward resolution, however it
did not fix the problem:
Uploaded Service Pack1 --no change
Did System Restore--No change
Undid the system restore--

BTW: Since uploading the SP1, computer appears slow, is
that my idea or this a known issue with sp1?

Thanks for the help

The SMART system is a way to detect that a harddrive has a high
probability of imminent failure . System restores won't help. Backup
now; see if you still have a warranty on the HD.

That is a hardware failure that has nothing whatever to do with
Windows XP.

Back up your critical data, check your Compaq warranty status, and
take *immediate* action to get that hard drive replaced.

Good luck

Thank you very everyone for your immediate reply, I did
contact Compaq at their 24x7 support center and they are
replacing my hard drive this week. I have also backed up
the data from the computer. Anyone know why this
happened? The computer was only 6 mos old...

It just may be that god has a plan for that little hard drive in
heaven and needs it now.

When you open the case make sure all the vents holes are clear and
that the power supply vents are not obstructed. Heat is the biggest
killer of hard drives If possible, mount the new drive so it has some
breathing room around the top and bottom.

This is not an XP matter. It is the drive itself releasing that error
rates are rising and indicating it may fail at any moment, and the BIOS
is telling you. Take this very seriously. Ensure you have all data
backed up, then get onto the makers (if the drive is still in its
warranty) asking for a replacement. If it is out of warranty, go and
buy a replacement
