I have been converting some of my dvd's to mp4 so I can put on my zune, and
then also converting some existing files I've had from avi to wmv.

Recently I converted the same avi file twice, once to wmv and the second
time mp4. The mp4 was considerably smaller. Is mp4 usually smaller?

I prefer mp4 anyways for a couple reasons. You can watch it in non WMP and
fast forward without it lagging or getting fuzzy for a few seconds of delay,
and also. I think mp4 works on psp and ipod and others. I didn't pay any
attention to the file size until I did the same file in both formats. Even
if mp4 is normally bigger I'd still use it but I'm just wondering.

mp4 is a great container for h.264 or mp4v
h.264 is the greatest vid cruncher going..alll while being better quality.
Encoding time is lengthy, unless you can utilize something like avivo on
some ati cards.
I have never had a small wmv that looked good, and I try all front ends,
including outputs to avi with windows VCM, etc etc

For all the babble about windows and evolving video...they seem to be way
behind.
vista premium is the only native support for "wmv HD"..and I sure as heck am
not going to that os just yet.
