I am trying to connect to a network. I have managed to connect everybody else (5) however my own notebook will not work. I have installed a PCMCIA fast Ethernet card, uninstalled + reinstalled all components, tried other connections, replaced cabling, checked and double checked all settings and everything seems fine. I can ping myself but my computer cannot see anyone and they cannot see me

Any advise appreciate

Colin

Check the subnet mask to make sure you are in the same address range as the
rest of the machines. Also check your IP to make sure it is in the same
subnet. Is there any activity on ht enetwork card?

Greetings Colin,

Ensure all firewalls are removed while troubleshooting. XP's firewall is only intended for direct connections to the Internet and must be disabled on local area networks. Each machine must have the same workgroup name (MSHOME by default in XP) and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. If the subnet mask if different, they are on different networks.

Sounds like a bad card. If you can try a known good card in your laptop
that would go a long way in troubleshooting the problem

Thanks for the help I will try that but having set all the other machines all with XP I am not hopeful

Thanks for getting back
Subnet mask is fine and the card knows when you dissconnect it from the network I can also see the lights on the card.

Is your laptop in the same workgroup as the others?
